To our giving benefactors, friends and critics

July 12, 2008

DAY: SATURDAY
LOCATION: PLAZA QUINCE MARTIREZ
ALLOTTED BUDGET: P 2,100.00

The preparation for the small feeding and sharing activity was actually done two days before. I spoke with some of the street adults and kids who I came across at the three parks located at the Central Business District I of Naga City. I informed them that we will be seeing each other July 12, 2008, Saturday between 4 to 5 in the afternoon. I assigned one who frequented the KFC parking lot and one of the young children I used to take care while I was a volunteer houseparent at an orphanage in the city run by the Missionaries of the Poor to gather them during that time.

On the afternoon of July 10, Thursday, I wrapped the small natural bath soaps (for the families), counted the chocolates (for the children) and small coin purses (for the women).  Friday evening, I listed what I still needed for the following day’s activity. Saturday morning, I bought some groceries – bread, softdrinks (for the adults), cheese whiz, juice (for the kids), sandwich wrappers, plastic cups, toothpastes, ice cubes and toothbrushes for that “afternoon delight.” after a brief lunch, between 1 to 4 pm, I prepared the sandwiches and took a picture of the whole giveaways with my cellphone camera.

At exactly 5pm, I walked to the Plaza Quince Martirez and called on the two women street adults who were backing out cars from the nearby fastfood chains near the area. I started distributing sandwiches and softdrinks / juices on paper cups one by one as most of them waited patiently for their turn to have some simple snacks. Next, I distributed toothbrushes, soaps, toothpastes, chocolates and coin purses.

They came one by one, in twos or in groups of three, so that I was not able to capture all of those who came in my small camera since most of them went off at once. For the people who stayed a little longer, I asked permission to take a picture of them before I did and even apologized for needing to do so.

I am planning to start a small street education class soon for at least once a week. I will let you know through email when I have organized at least 5 willling students from the group we are helping now.
